Abstract
The results from irregular antibody screening and identification tests on 59,389 sera
from hospitalized transfusion candidates in Seoul National University Hospital were
analyzed in order to investigate the overall incidence of irregular antibodies and their
characteristics. The tests were done with microplate method including saline room
temperature, saline 37¡É and antiglobulin phase.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Irregular antibodies were identified in 344 cases among 59,389 sera from hospitalized
transfusion candidates, therefore the overall incidence was 0.58%
2. Clinically significant antibodies which reacted in 37¡É saline and/or antiglobulin
phase were 35.5% (122cases) of all antibodies detected, and in 12 cases, the antibodies
were detected only in the antiglobvlin phase.
3. The most frequent irregular antibodies were anti-Lea (61 cases), anti
-P©û(52cases), anti-Leb (35cases), anti-I(16cases) and anti-E (15cases) in
the decreasing order of frequency.
4. In conclusion, antibody screening tests and/or crosshatching including 37¡É
/antiglobulin phase must be considered as a routine pretransfusion test for all
transfusion candidates for safe transfusion practices.
